The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) holds the title of the largest animal to ever live on Earth. These majestic marine mammals can reach lengths of up to 100 feet (30 meters) and weigh as much as 200 tons, making them even larger than the biggest dinosaurs. One of the most astonishing features of the blue whale is its heart, which can weigh as much as a small car and pump enormous volumes of blood through its massive body. 

Despite its size, the blue whale feeds primarily on one of the smallest organisms in the ocean—krill. Using its baleen plates, it filters these tiny crustaceans from the water, consuming up to 4 tons of krill a day during feeding seasons. Blue whales are also known for their loud vocalizations, which can travel hundreds of miles underwater and may be the loudest sound made by any animal.

Unfortunately, blue whale populations were drastically reduced during the whaling era, but they are now protected under international law. Though their numbers are slowly recovering, they remain an endangered species, with an estimated population of 10,000 to 25,000 individuals worldwide. Their size, grace, and power make them a symbol of the ocean’s vastness and fragility.
